No evidence for externally triggered substorms based on superposed epoch analysis of IMF Bz

چکیده
[1] Superposed epoch analyses have shown that, on average, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns northward close to substorm onset. This has been commonly accepted as evidence for the substorm onset being triggered by a rapid northward turning of the IMF. Here we show that the tendency arises in any superposed epoch analysis of the IMF in which event onset is biased to occur for southward IMF, irrespective of a coincident rapid northward turning of the IMF. The overall IMF variation found in the largest superposed epoch analysis of this kind is also well reproduced using a Minimal Substorm Model in which substorm onsets are determined without the requirement of a northward IMF turning trigger. We discuss the explanation underlying these results and conclude that there is no conclusive evidence in favour of the hypothesis that substorm onsets are triggered by a rapid northward turning of the IMF. Ionospheric and geomagnetic responses to changes in IMF BZ: a superposed epoch study
Superposed epoch studies have been carried out in order to determine the ionospheric response at mid-latitudes to southward turnings of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). This is compared with the geomagnetic response, as seen in the indices Kp, AE and Dst. The solar wind, IMF and geomagnetic data used were hourly averages from the years 1967–1989 and thus cover a full 22-year cycle in th...
متن کاملSuperposed epoch analysis of the ionospheric convection evolution during substorms: onset latitude dependence
Using data from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) we investigate the ionospheric convection response to magnetospheric substorms. Substorms were identified using the Far Ultraviolet (FUV) instrument on board the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) spacecraft, and were then binned according to the magnetic latitude of their onset. A superposed epoch analys...
متن کاملThe effect of nonlinear ionospheric conductivity enhancement on magnetospheric substorms
We introduce the effect of enhanced ionospheric conductivity into a low-order, physics-based nonlinear model of the nightside magnetosphere called WINDMI. The model uses solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) parameters from the ACE satellite located at the L1 point to predict substorm growth, onset, expansion and recovery measured by the AL index roughly 50–60 min in advance. The d...
متن کاملGlobal auroral responses to abrupt solar wind changes: Dynamic pressure, substorm, and null events
[1] Global auroral images are used to investigate how specific types of solar wind change relate to the resulting type of auroral-region disturbance, with the goal of determining fundamental response types. For not strongly southward IMF conditions (Bz ^ 5 nT), we find that IMF changes that are expected to reduce the convection electric field after^30 min of negative IMF Bz cause typical substo...
متن کاملRelation of substorm disturbances triggered by abrupt solar-wind changes to physics of plasma sheet transport
Substorm onset occurs within the near-Earth plasma sheet in the region that maps to the Harang electric field reversal observed within the ionosphere. IMF changes that are expected to reduce the convection electric field after 25 min of negative IMF B are well known to cause substorms. Solar wind dynamic pressure P enhancements following prolonged strongly southward IMF (B 8 nT) also cause subs...
